It’s the Water

So back in The Day, “It’s the water” was all about a TV commercial extolling the virtues of one of my fave collegiate frosty, foamy beverages. A few days ago, my office took the catchy H2O phrase one giant step forward for mankind.

Don’t know about you guys, but I’ve always battled implementing the universal 8-glasses/day of water recommendation. And in spite of my best intentions, the 8-glass rule has always seemed to go the daily way of 150-sit-ups, two 5-minute only Facebook engagements, and ZERO “Almost done” dental patient promises. But if my mom was still around, she’d at least be happy with my consistent “Please” and “Thank you” production.

Doc Sahara (Pasadena chiropractor/kinesiologist to the elite athletes…me included…in my dreams) got me started downing 2-liters of Smartwater per day. I planted water bottles strategically, pledged to drink the stuff every hour, and within a couple of months I was down to one liter…and falling fast…but still not bad for someone who used to play tennis all day on two or three trips to the drinking fountain. Yeah, I was serving and volleying way back before anyone ever took water in a bottle seriously…really (didn’t have a cell phone either but indoor plumbing was a must.)

Clinically, for the longest time, we’ve used sterile water in our own closed system. Shucks, who wants to roll the dice with the public stuff, even if it follows more stringent government regulations than does the bottled variety that might be older than a fine wine allowed to age prematurely in the plastic-melting SoCal (or wherever) sun?

But just as with my chosen Organic Chemistry recovery beverage; alkaline, antioxidant, ionized water comes straight outa the tap. And alkaline H2O is flat-out better for you than the acidic form found in bottles, whether the contents be water, juice, or ugh…soda. And it’s true; if you put a tooth (hopefully an extracted one) in a bottle of soda overnight, the sugar-acid combo will disappear a defenseless bicuspid by morning. And if acid can disintegrate enamel, imagine what it can do to delicate internal lining tissue?

In 1965, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare announced that the intake of reduced (alkaline) water was effective for restoration of intestinal flora metabolism, aiding in stabilizing blood glucose levels and managing diabetic gangrene. Studies also showed alkaline water was helpful in lowering uric acid levels in gout, improving liver function, and managing gastric-duodenal ulcers, colitis, and auto-immune diseases.

Dr. Hironi Shinya, a leading gastroenterologist and surgeon who actually developed the electrosurgical polypectomy snare now universally used in colonoscopies, surmised diseases “originate in an acidic dirty colon” (and that is not a delightful visual.)  In his book The Enzyme factor, which has sold over 2-million copies in Japan, Shinya extols the many advantages of drinking alkaline, ionized water.

Our new Kangen water delivery system has been around since the mid-60s and is the Gold Standard and a giant step forward from our acidic sterile water and bottled drinking water, as well as what comes unfiltered out of the tap. The system can be adjusted to provide alkaline drinking water and therapeutic clinical water, acidic enough to actually kill harmful microorganisms that can cause infection and delay healing. Needless to say, our friends and family (everyone we engage) will be drinking alkaline, ionized, antioxidant water and receiving therapeutic levels of acidic water during clinical care.

In the 2000 Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health, my all-time favorite USC dental school Dean, Doc Harold Slavkin (also a world renowned researcher who headed up a federal health agency) is famous for observing “Dentistry needs to know more about Medicine and Medicine needs to know more about Dentistry”.  And it’s awesome when we can add another effective tool to our clinical toolbox that elevates the service and care we provide friends and family to the next level.

Ask your dentist about alkaline, ionized, antioxidant water and a delivery system that can help add quality and years of life.
